Date nights that won't break the bank!08 Feb 2018
If you prefer a low-key date night over embarrassingly large teddy bears, 15 course degustation dinners and elaborately planned flash mobs, you’re not alone. We’ve rounded up the best date night ideas that won’t break the bank.
Dinner & a movie
You can’t go wrong with the classic ‘dinner and a movie’. Whether it’s a first date, a night out with your girlfriends, or a couple of hours without the kids (woohoo!), there’s something endearing about enjoying a meal together and snuggling up to each other with a giant box of popcorn or your favourite candy bar snack.
For dinner, visit New Shanghai or Salsa’s which are open until 7pm, Teppanyaki King until 8.30pm, Nene Chicken or Oporto until 9pm or Beach House Bar & Grill until midnight on Valentine’s Day. Then take your pick from the hottest new release movies at Event Cinemas on level 3 including Black Panther, Clint Eastwood’s 15:17 to Paris, Den of Thieves, I, Tonya, Fifty Shades Freed and more.
Don’t forget, Cinebuzz members save big with movie tickets starting from $12 each. It’s not being cheap, it’s being smart. Plus, book ahead online and you can select the best seats in the house.
Fun, games & dessert
If you’re looking for a fun night out to inject a little spark back into your relationship, get spontaneous and head to Funhouse at The Myer Centre. It’s an adventure playground for adults and children alike. Located on Level 3, Funhouse has a huge range of new and old school arcade style machines and games and so you can challenge your date to a shoot-out or race…and of course if you’re talented enough, that giant teddy on the top shelf could be yours. Talk about extra brownie points!
Finish the evening with a coffee and crème brulee or Belgium waffles at Sweet Treats (open until 9pm) and that’s game, set, match.
Surprise and spoil your better half by booking a massage or facial on their lunch hour, or if you’re feeling extra romantic, arrange for their boss to give them an early mark so you can enjoy a treatment at the same time. Chi Link, Ella Bache, Happy Feet Steam Massage, Massage Philosophy and Shine Beauty offer a huge range of relaxing massages and facials to pamper both body and soul. It’s win-win.
A picnic in the city
Sometimes simple gestures are the most appreciated. Stock up on your loved one’s favourite snacks, nibbles or takeaway, a bottle of wine and a picnic blanket and whisk them away for a stroll through the City Botanic Gardens or Roma Street Parklands and a feast under the stars. Here are a few ideas on what to pack to set the mood:
- Head to Level E and duck into Coles Central for some cheese, crackers and a punnet of strawberries, followed by BWS for a bottle of sparkling wine
- Let Oporto (Level A) do the heavy lifting and order a Half Chicken Box or two which come packed with half of their famous flame grilled Portuguese chicken, a pita bread, garlic dip and your choice of two sides
- For a fresh and healthy option, pick and mix your own sushi platter – choose your fave hand rolls from My Sushi and remember the mayo, Wasabi, pickled ginger and chopsticks.
However you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day, it’s always the thought that counts.
