Make your own jewellery at Beads and Beads!26 Jun 2018
When travelling with his wife Lyn in the 1980s, Col Watts was struck with intrigue by beads and jewellery and an idea was planted. On his return to Brisbane, and with a baby on the way, he set about building Brisbane's most well recognised beading store, Beads and Beads.
While Col still manages more administrative duties, Beads and Beads is now led by his two daughters, Jillian and Annabelle (with mum Lyn also making and repairing jewellery in the store). Beads and Beads has evolved over its time and now has two key products; unique, ready-made jewellery pieces on display in store, and their larger offering, boxes and cabinets filled with beautiful beads sourced from around the world for DIY jewellery makers.
From semi-precious stones, ceramic beads, Italian and Indian glass beads, to tribal beads and jewellery from Africa and Afghanistan, Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls, Beads and Beads stock them all and the sisters regularly travel to Asia to hand select the highest quality they can find for their customers.
Beads and Beads also specialise in in-store repairs, alterations and remodelling. While traditional jewellers/goldsmiths repair silver and gold jewellery, Beads and Beads will happily repair or alter costume and fashion jewellery. It could be a piece from your eccentric aunt's collection requiring a little alteration, or your favourite beaded necklace or funky earrings which need repair. Jillian even specialises in reknotting pearls - perfect if your precious pearls need some TLC.
Beads and Beads prides itself on the quality of its pieces, rather than bowing to trends or fads. Annabelle says that bold colours such as navy, red, black and white are popular combinations which never go out of style. However, if you are looking for the perfect necklace, bracelet or earrings to accessorise your special outfit, bring it (or a photo) into store and the team can help you design a piece to complement your look. Imagine wearing your own piece of jewellery, designed especially for you, to a special gala dinner, ball, awards night, charity event or wedding.
If jewellery making is something you're interested in, book into a Beads and Beads introductory jewellery making class to design and learn how to make your very own necklace or pair of drop earrings. Classes are limited to eight people and cost just $50 per person plus the cost of your beads. Be warned though, according to Annabelle and Jillian, once you start you won't be able to stop!
